Baja California, Mexico Galleries

Baja California, Mexico Part 1 : In the spring of 2008, we spent two months roaming around the Baja Peninsula. What originally had us worried about traveling south of the border alone, led to us trying to figure out how to stay down there longer and longer even after we had left our guides we had crossed the border with.

We have so many pictures from our travels in Baja, we split them up into two seperate galleries. From abandon villages, whale watching excursions, camping on the beach to exploring small towns that havent changed much in the past century, we found a great appreciation for Baja.

I know we'll be back, because after two months, believe it or not, there still was plenty of areas we didnt visit. Next trip south, we plan to do more back road excursions and go a bit slower, if that is even possible.

By the time we crossed back over into California, we had traveled more than 3,000 miles, had spent two full months South of the Border, made dozens of new friends and were changed for ever on our views of Mexico.

Flying Mobulas on the Sea of Cortez - Baja California Sur, Mexico : While spending a few months traveling through Baja, we were able to witness this spectacle which is one I'll never forget! No one knows why the mobulas jump out of the water, but they do it non-stop and are quite the acrobats.

These were photographed just off the beach in East Cape which is a world renowned spot for Kite Surfing and Sail Boarding due to its winter winds. Luckily for Cindy and I, the waters were calm and the Mobulas were jumping almost constantly while we stayed here.

This was also the location where I tipped over in my kayak while trying to photograph these acrobats and dumped about $8000 worth of camera gear into the ocean. Luckily, we had captured these shots the previous day, so they are very special to us, as they are some of our most costly shots ever taken...LOL

Abalone Fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico : Abalone is a mollusk, related to a sea snail, similar in flavor to a clam, but much larger! We had never heard of these specimens before visiting Bahia Ascuncion, but this small fishing village just south of Guerrero Negro relies on the Abalone for their living.

Pat got to go out fishing with Juan, one of the guys we met in the small village of Bahia Asuncion

What a way to make a living and something I'm sure he'll never forget!

Congo's Awesome Charters - East Cape, Los Barriles, Baja California Sur, Mexico : While staying on the East Cape of Los Barriles in Southern Baja Mexico, we found a beautiful little RV park, the owners also happened to own a Charter Fishing service that did day cruises.

Cindy and I went out for one of these day cruises where they stock the boat with people, beer, food and experienced captains to see what it was all about.

From the high deck of a big boat is the best place to see the aquatic life this area of Baja has to offer. We watched as Whales breeched out of the water right in front of us, slapped their tails against the calm surface when diving deep, and Cindy was even able to capture a picture of a Humpback Whale launching out of the ocean which was selected as one of the pictures for the 2009 Baja Calendar!

Theresa and Sean, the owners of East Cape RV Park are both great people who went out of their way to make sure we had a wonderful time. This is one of those excursions we plan to go out on again and again, each time we visit the East Cape.

Congo's Awesome Sportfishing Charter - East Cape, Los Barriles, Baja California Sur, Mexico : While Camping at East Cape RV Park, I went out for a day on one of Congo's Awesome Sportfishing Charters on the Sea of Cortez.

It didnt take long for our Captain Roger to land some Dorado, a monstorous Marlin, and a Mako shark that put up one arm numbing fight.

We floated past dolphins, whales and some sea lions and even got to see a few Sea Turtles.

A wonderful day on the water, but then again isnt any day on the water a good one.

Camping & Surfing on Playa Los Cerritos, Baja California Sur, Mexico : Playa Los Cerritos is a beautiful, sweeping expanse of pristine beach just south of the farming community of Pescadero, near the famous Todos Santos which is home to the Hotel California.

The Playa is about an hours drive up from Cabo San Lucas and known for its year round swells that bring surfers in from all over the world.

There used to be a large RV campground here, but was closed in 2006. Some Americans have built the Cerritos Beach Club which is a beautiful tiki bar with the best service we experienced in all of Baja. Waiters that bring you cold cervesas right on the beach and supply you with thick, warm blankets if you want to stick around after the sun dips below the pacific.

We planned on just stopping for the night, and ended up spending a full week camped right on the beach. When I asked the Bar Manager if we could camp on the beach, he said "If you pull up close enough to the bar, you can probably even use our Wifi!" Needless to say, we dropped anchor and had trouble leaving.

They even rent laptops for those who would like to stay dry and surf the web while sun bathing.

Playa Los Cerritos was probably one of our favorite spots along the Southern tip of the Peninsula. Cant wait to get back and enjoy the hospitality!

Isla Espiritu Santo - Baja California Sur, Mexico : Isla Espiritu Santo, is a 23,383-acre island in the Sea of Cortez — one of the most biologically diverse marine areas in the world. This island is just a short boat ride across the water from Playa Tecolote.

The Island has the most intact ecosystem in the region. Several animals on Isla Espiritu Santo are found nowhere else in the world, including the blacktailed jack rabbit, ground squirrel and two species of snake.

The island is home to 53 regional endemic plant species. The waters surrounding the island support coral reefs, resident colonies of sea lions, and 500 species of fish.

For only $50 we spent the afternoon circling the Island on a nice boat with English speaking guides who told us about the native species, showed us many secluded coves and allowed us to snorkel with Sea Lions!

If ever in the La Paz area of Baja California, make sure to visit Isla Espiritu Santo!
