Ghost Towns Galleries

Nevada City Ghost Town - Montana 2009 : Nevada City might not be an actual Ghost Town as one would imagine finding an abandon town in the middle of nowhere. But we actually enjoyed this better than some of the other Ghost Towns we've visited. Due to one mans insight and kindness, Charles Bovey was smart enough to buy up buildings from around the state of Montana and recreate what was once a thriving Gold Mining town.

Nevada City is now run by the Montana Heritage Commission and does a great job of providing you with each buildings history and where it came from or what it was originally used as. Nevada City has 14 historic buildings original to the site plus a collection of more than 100 other historic buildings saved from locations all over Montana. The town provides a great backdrop for Living History weekends while its open through the summer months.

Make sure you visit the Nevada City Music Hall with a collection of historic music machines, gaviolis and player pianos--the largest music machine collection in the world open to the public and hear some of these machines play their music.

If you're into history, this Living Ghost Town should be at the top of your list! I know we both enjoyed it for hours on end. Well worth the $8 entrance fee.

Virginia City Ghost Town - Montana 2009 : Virginia City isnt a Ghost Town like some of the ones you might find in Arizona, Colorado or scattered throughout the West. People still live here and try to keep the buildings as stable as possible and looking like they did when they were built in the late 1800's. But there are lots of sections of town where you feel like you're walking back in time along a wooden boardwalk with the clippity-clop of the horses pulling the carriages along.

Virginia City is a living town of 150 year round residents with the West's best preserved gold mining town from the 1860s. When visiting, you walk the same boardwalks that desparado Vigilantes once patrolled. Guests are transported to a time when rowdy miners mingled in saloons and restaurants with women who came to town to make money off the miners who only had one thing in mind.

You can view over 100 historic buildings complete with artifacts and furnishings that are true to that era when the town was bustling with over 10,000 residence. Ride the 1910 fully refurbished steam locomotive, the stagecoach, attend a live theater show, stay the night in homey historic lodging. Shop in unique gift and specialty shops. Enjoy fine dining and old-fashioned bakery and candy shop goods.

There is a reason Virginia City is one of the most visited attractions in the State of Montana. And its only a 2 hour drive from West Yellowstone! If visiting the National Park, it should be an added roadtrip to any summer vacation.

If you were to purchase any of these images, the watermark will not be on the print. Thanks for looking and we hope you come back soon as the galleries are always being updated as the adventure continues

Bodie Ghost Town, California : Bodie Ghost town is one of the West's most preserved Ghost Towns. It's located just past the turnoff for the Yosemite Valley and the Tioga Pass. Bodie State Historic Park is a genuine California gold-mining ghost town. Visitors can walk down the deserted streets of a town that once had a population of over 10,000 people.

The town of Bodie was founded by Waterman S. Body (William Bodey), who had discovered small amounts of gold in hills north of Mono Lake. In 1877, the Standard Company struck pay dirt and a gold rush transformed Bodie from a town of 20 people to a boomtown

If you visit, plan on spending the entire day here if not two!

Vulture Mine Ghost Town, Arizona : The Vulture Mine is about 14 miles from Wickenburg, Arizona.

In 1863 gold was discovered here and at one time was one of the largest gold mines in Arizona. It is called the Vulture Mine because legend has it that a vulture felled by a gunshot landed near a gold nugget.

The Vulture Mine thrived through the 1890's and was still operational in the 1920's. In 1942 the mining here stopped due the War effort. There are various buildings still in great condition, a school and a hanging tree still to be seen here.

There is an entrance fee to Vulture Mine and visitors can take a self-guided tour. They also have rustic camping which is basically an open dirt parking lot, but suitable for larger groups as long as you're self sufficient.

Cerbat Ghost Town - Arizona : In the late 1860's, claims in the Cerbat area were found and mining began. Eventually, a town that was to later hold the county seat, sprang up.

Cerbat had about a hundred residents and was very isolated, yet managed to have two doctors and a lawyer. Mining continued into the present century, but the town has since died. This ghost town is out in the middle of no where, so if you visit, bring supplies.

Way off the beaten track, and long ago forgotten. Good Boondocking with the camper though

Mineral City Ghost Town - Arizona : Mineral City Ghost town isnt much of a ghost town.

There are a few adobe structures covered with tin roofs left standing, and multiple foundations scattered around the headframe foundation of the mine shaft.

Of all the ghost towns we've visited, this is probably the least favorite of the bunch just because there is so little there. Make sure you have a good imagination

Old Victoria Mine, Ontonagon Michigan : One of the first sites ever mined for copper in the new world. Now just left as a very picturesque ghost town.

This is where the famous "Ontonagon Boulder" was discovered in the Ontonagon river.

The Boulder is now resting in the National Museum of Natural Science at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

Traveling through this area in late fall, we were bathed in the rich fall colors the heavily wooded forests provided.

Cool temps and beautiful colors made for a great stay. If visiting Michigan's Upper Peninsula, this is a great place to spend the day wandering around and the hosts of the little town are very nice people.
